Health assessments for the immigrants to the US are conducted by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) at the Migration Health Assessment Center (MHAC).

What to bring to the health assessment
(Including repeated health assessment):

1. Appointment letter
2. Passport or other travel document. Photocopies will not be accepted.
3. Three photographs in the same format as for the US visa
4. Vaccination record, if available
5. Previous chest X-rays, if available

6. If you suffer or have suffered from any chronic condition or underwent major medical or surgical treatment, please bring medical records or hospital reports. Insufficient information may lead to delays and additional testing.

Important notices:

1. Children 2—14 years old must visit the MHAC twice. On the day of the health assessment, they will have a Tuberculin Skin Test (TST), which will be read 48-72 hours (2-3 days) later. Alternatively, they may come 48-72 hours (2-3 days) before the examination for the TST. For this reason, children under 15 years should not come for TST on Thursdays.

2. Children under 16 years must be accompanied by a parent or a legal guardian, who can sign and take decisions on their behalf.

The fees are to be paid in US Dollars or Nepali Rupees at the IOM exchange rate for the month (check exchange rate with IOM staff). It includes:

1. Physical examination
2. Chest X-ray with additional views, if needed
3. Blood drawing, serological test for syphilis, including confirmatory test, if needed and treatment for syphilis, if needed and treatment for syphilis, if needed
4. Tuberculin skin test
5. Additional testing for tuberculosis (TB), if needed
6. Treatment for TB, if needed
7. Reviewing and transcribing vaccination records

8. Pregnancy test, if needed

The fee does not include:

1. Vaccinations (charged separately, see attachment)
2. Any additional investigations, which may be required to establish or clarify a diagnosis, including psychiatric evaluation
3. Any costs associated with the applicant’s stay in Kathmandu, including costs related to a long-term stay for TB treatment

4. Any costs associated with the treatment of side effects that may occur during TB or syphilis treatment

Fees must be paid at MHAC prior to the health assessment (on the day of health assessment or before). Fees for vaccinations must be paid on the day of the health assessment after review of the vaccination history by an IOM health worker.

Fees for repeated health assessment will be same or less than the initial exam fee and depend on the number of tests required for the assessment.

Advice regarding the health assessment

1. Do not conceal medical conditions. Deliberate attempts to hide them will be reported to the embassy.
2. Do not conceal pregnancy. Pregnancy will not affect your immigration prospects, however, some immunizations are contradicted during pregnancy and could harm your baby.
3. Abstain from drinking alcohol on the day before the examination.
4. Note that your whole body will be examined. Please maintain proper hygiene.
5. Postpone or re-schedule your appointment if you or your child is acutely ill with a high fever or rash.

6. If you use glasses or contact lens, please bring them to the health assessment.
